Why the Need
The statistics regarding the mental health of our college students are startling:
- 45% of students have reported feeling so depressed they found it difficult to function
- 60% of students say they have felt too stressed to complete school work
- Nearly 20% of students report they have considered dropping out of school for financial reasons, academic problems, or personal issues
With the average college counselor having to manage more than 1,900 students, existing resources are
sometimes not enough to meet all students’ needs all of the time. An increasing amount of college
counseling centers report increased staff burnout, two to three week wait periods for students to see a
counselor, and decreased ability to serve students that need immediate short-term counseling. And
students that are distance learners may not be able to take advantage of any on-campus resources.
