Fitness-for-Duty Exams

Companies opt to evaluate an employee’s ability to perform the duties of their job for two principal reasons:

  1. Establish whether they have made an adequate recovery following disability
  2. Determine why they may not be performing up to the standards of the position they hold

AllOne Health is experienced in assisting employers with both types of evaluations. Those workers returning from disabling injury or illness are typically referred to and evaluated for job fitness by a specialist within our extensive network. Fitness-for-duty exams offer the client confirmation that once an employee is released to return to work for either a work-related or non-work related incident, that the employee will have the physical capacity to perform the job functions safely and without physical harm.

Fitness-for-duty exams start with a job description of the employee along with their medical provider’s release file for the condition s/he was treated for. The nurse schedules the exam and forwards the information to the provider performing the exam. If any follow up is recommended, the nurse will communicate with the client and employee. An independent occupational medical provider in close proximity to the employee performs the exam.

Assessing employees who have trouble meeting production benchmarks are typically more complex, since the reasons for substandard performance are not always readily apparent. For example, physical impairment or emotional distresses are just two of the countless reasons workers may underperform. Evaluation of such cases begins with a discussion with a board-certified physician. The company and the physician will plan the best path to evaluate the employee and determine his or her ability to perform the essential job duties. The benefits to your organization include a safe return to work capacity and unbiased medical exam.
