Back Safety Training

Back pain is one of the most commonly cited medical complaints and back injuries are one of the most common occupational health injuries (Source: CDC). A variety of things can cause back pain including:

  • Muscle strains due to improper lifting
  • Poor posture
  • Ruptured/protruding disc
  • Abnormal spinal curve
  • Tight, stiff, or fatigued muscles
  • Bone spurs/pinched nerve
  • Wear and tear (arthritis)
  • Repetitive motion

Additional factors that can contribute to back pain include: being overweight, having weak “core” muscles, a history of back pain, poor physical fitness, inflexible muscles, not stretching, and age. Our Back Safety classes are intended to give you the tools to:

  • Prevent an initial accident or costly back injury from occurring
  • Motivate employees to take action in improving their fitness level, working postures, lifting techniques and body mechanics
  • Eliminate unnecessary work-related strain and injury to the spine

The first part of the Back Safety class reviews key topics regarding types and causes of back injuries. Proper posture and office mechanics are reviewed, as are safe lifting techniques and the advantages of a pre-work stretching program. Then the instructor demonstrates proper material handling techniques that are customized to the job descriptions of the back safety class attendees. The class finishes up by leading a session that practices warm-up stretches that can be done by employees to increase their circulation, flexibility, and back strength.

In addition to our Back Safety training, we also offer other classes in Slip and Fall Prevention, CPR, and First Aid.
